GREENDALE FARM SHOP

March 2, 2013

The Greendale Farm Shop is on Sidmouth Road near Farringdon – that’s the main road from Exeter towards Sidmouth. As more and more of us search for a more sustainable way to shop this is the type of retailer who should continue to flourish.

Now selling meat and game, with an on site butcher, dairy and deli, groceries of all kinds and more recently joined by the wonderful Fishmongers (@TheFishmongers on Twitter) who now also run a take away fish and chip stand. This also includes the wonderful Exmouth Mussel Company. Fish at its freshest from the boats before it goes off to market.

Their business boomed recently when they were on TV when Dave and Si, aka The Hairy Bikers, visited them to buy fish for a meal they made for members of Exmouth RNLI during their latest series.

Or you can also enjoy their fish and chips in the cafe which offers a great range of freshly prepared meals from soups and sandwiches to butchers faggots and creamy mash, butchers burgers and a good range of cakes and desserts.

A really nice choice of breads was running low when we arrived but plenty more was coming out from the kitchen while we were in the cafe.

At the rear of the shop there is also an area very useful to us selling the kind of basics we need to get without going to a supermarket – hand wash, toilet rolls, icing sugar etc.

Something we’ve not seen elsewhere is a superb range of flavoured oils and vinegars in large casks which you can decant into individual small bottles as single items or perhaps choose an oil and a vinegar together for your own ready made marinade or dressing.

Outside, apart from the numerous chickens happily scratching around with their friend Ostrich, are a few animals to look at with the children.

The staff were all friendly and working hard – and looking so much happier than those often scowling behind a supermarket checkout!

So if you’re visiting the East Devon/Jurassic coast this is another destination to add to foodie travels – not far from River Cottage HQ, River Cottage Axminster Canteen, Lyme Bay Winery, Town Mill and Hix Fish and Oyster House in Lyme and many more this is a real food lovers paradise.
